Kids Stamps at APS
Bellefonte YMCA’s Stamp Camp USAPostage stamps, with their colorful images and real-life stories, have fascinated millions since they first appeared more than 150 years ago. To introduce a new generation to the pleasures of stamp collecting, the American Philatelic Society and the Bellefonte Family YMCA teamed up during the week of July 11 to present Stamp Camp USA.
Each camper received a stamp notebook, complete with stamp album pages, and other collecting tools and supplies. They were able to choose stamps, envelopes, and postmarks for their personal stamp collection from a large selection of free items available to the children. Campers learned stamp collecting basics, including the proper care of their stamp collection and the use of the cool stamp tools they received.
Lots of activities followed, such as scavenger hunts, soaking stamps, and creative story-telling. Each camper spent many hours creating a three-dimensional exhibit using stamps and craft supplies. The final activity was a wild and woolly stamp auction, where campers bid on coveted items (such as a mint sheet of Walt Disney stamps or a new stamp album) with “stamp camp cash” they had earned throughout the week.
An Awards Ceremony was held the last day of camp where Joshua Moore (Brooklyn) received the Grand Prize with his “Best Creative Presentation of Future Events — Space Station.” Shane Guyer (Pleasant Gap) received a first prize for his “Best Visual Presentation of a Natural Effect — Waterfall.” Other prizes were awarded to Christopher Moore (Brooklyn) for his “Best Use of Action Movement — Train Depot”; Mariele Schechter (Bellefonte) for her “Best Use of a Creative Memory — Ocean and Sea”; Megan Montgomery (Pleasant Gap) for her “Best Display of an Eco-System — Jungle”; Hannah Rock (Bellefonte) for her “Best Use of Natural Habitat — Horses in the Wild; and Shannon Moore (Brooklyn) for her “Best Depiction of a Model — Stable.”
A graduation ceremony was held at the end of the camp, followed by an open house for parents and visitors, where all of the campers’ exhibits were on display.
