Glassine Surfer September 2002

Part I :: Part II :: Part III
Tuva Grows

The Tannu Tuva Collectors Society web site was recently updated and expanded. The site carries details of the 1930's issues, as well as the so-called recent "issues."

Silver Jubilee

The 1935 Silver Jubilee of George V was preserved with a huge omnibus issue of 250 stamps issued by 59 postal services and now it has its own Web site thanks to Neil Donen. This is a serious philatelic research Web site, and my advice would be to first read the pages in the "Information" section for guidance

The Marshall Islands

Dirk H.R. Spennemann's Marshall Island Web site is a massive site that is part of a larger site titled "The Marshall Islands: An Electronic Library and Archive." The Marshall Island site covers stamps, culture and society, European history, literature and art, public health, and many others.

Spennemann's plans to maintain an online Marshall Island archive, and he's collected many articles. However the site's current project is a 17 chapter history and catalogue of stamps and postal history of the German Marshall Islands by Spennemann.

Stamp Tags

Jim Bryden's "Stamp Tags" program is an extremely useful program that prints small identifying tags that can be slipped in alongside stamps in stockbooks and glassines. There's a trail version available on site that prints stamp tags. The new version is loaded with easy-to-use menus that automatically format tags for different stamp sizes and glassine envelopes.

Directory Printer

"Directory Printer" is a small, easy-to-use bit of freeware lets you spit out a copy of the disk's files either to your printer or to a text file.  If you have volumes of disks and you save your "saved directories" to a text file, then all you'd need to do is a simple text search for the needed file.

Better than Notepad

Code-Genie is a Web developers text-editor which can also be used as a Notepad replacement. Code-Genie is a very good plain text writer if you want something better than Notepad, and it's a very functional code writer.

On the other hand, if you just want a text writer, EditPad is a good choice. It now comes in a Lite (freeware) and Pro version. It's simple, basic and fast, and as says it's not bloatware.

AbiWord

"AbiWord" lets you read, write, and edit Word's .doc files without having to submit to Word's bloated requirements. AbiWord is an open-sourced, free word processing program that looks and feels like Microsoft's popular word processor. It reads and writes in .doc format and is available in Windows and Mac OS X flavors. AbiWord isn't a bare essentials text editor, and owing to its open source code genealogy, changes and improvements, features and options, are coming along quickly.

Unsolicited Commercial Software Detector

Educated yourself and inoculated your browser against adware, stealth-ware, and their parasite cousins. Visit the doxdesk site and see if any of this parasite software is your system. If doxdesk detects a parasite, it will tell you it did and then you can read the free data on the source of and solution to these stealthy programs.

The current solution to parasites is Lavasoft's Ad-aware program, which scans your memory, registry and hard drives for known spyware and can remove them if you'd like.
