The US 2003 new stamp program is billed as a "Year of Firsts," but it features many of our annual philatelic friends.
The first issue of 2003 honors Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American U.S. Supreme Court, and later in the year Pelican Island, the first national wildlife refuge, and the first powered airplane flight by the Wright Brothers will be commemorated in stamps.
After that, the US continues its many commemorative stamp series, including the Legends of Hollywood, American Design, Nature of America, Lunar New Year, and the Literary Arts, with striking designs.
Throughout the year, the US will honor Ohio, Roy Acuff, and Cesar Chavez, others with single stamps, while also issuing four stamps apiece for Mary Cassatt, Early Football Heros, Holidays, and others.
Then the US will also find time to issue stamps and selvage for American Filmmakers and Old Glory, while another homage to the Grand Old Flag comes with five new US Flag definitive designs in February.
You'll find a few new rate stamps sprinkled here and there, and as always, there's always room for more issues when you're talking about modern stamp collecting.
New issues are listed on pages by month of issue. Announced issues that haven't been definitely scheduled are listing below.
